Space 2 Gallery
Not only do cigar box guitars have a great history, the handcrafted instruments are truly a joy to play. Expert cigar box guitar-maker, Mike “Katfish” Karash has created 37 beautiful handmade guitars which will be on view in TSKW’s Space 2 through April 12. The public is invited to an opening reception with the artist on Thursday, March 20 from 6-9pm.
Karash’s creations are examples of clever recycling at its most artful. Karash uses everyday household items, from cigar boxes and film reels, to washboards and wash tubs, and transforms them into fun and functional musical instruments.
Now retired after 26 years with the Key West Fire Department, Karash says he picked up the skill to carry on a family tradition. His grandfather was a furniture builder, and crafted heirlooms to pass down the family line. Karash has three granddaughters of his own now, and wanted to do the same for them. Cigar box guitars were a natural fit, and are small, portable, and perfect for Key West.
Come see the beautifully handcrafted pieces from now through April 12 at TSKW’s Space 2.
