The Key West Theater Presents '129 Miles From Walmart'

Did you know that Key West is about 129 miles away from the nearest Walmart? That is just one of the many reasons life in the Keys is not like anywhere else in the country. “129 Miles From Walmart,” opening at the Key West Theater February 17th, is an inspired evening which includes world premieres of original short plays by some of Florida’s best, and celebrates those who are living their lives a bit differently than most. “We want to continue to give a voice to new playwrights,” says Key West Theater Artistic Director Juliet Gray, “especially those living and writing in Key West.” Most of the new works in “129 Miles From Walmart” have been written by Key West writers including Gray, Bob Bowersox, Michael Marrero, Jon Rhoads, and Joanie Sullivan among others. The evening stars Colin Bevis, Brian Furlong, Erin McKenna, Joanie Sullivan, Philip Cole White, and Alexandra Zeto.

Highlights from “129 Miles From Walmart” include the short play “Bob Goes to the Park” by Key West playwright Michael Marrero, which addresses this current age of constant connection to all things via the Internet. The lead character Bob is forced to shut down at the park and is amazed at what happens when he does. “Going Again,” by Key West playwright Bob Bowersox is set in the ethereal in-between, where Facilitators help the Travelers on their next mystical journey. In “How to Explode the World,” by Key West playwright Jon Rhoads, a veteran surgeon mentors a young doctor through a crisis of conscience. The play “It’s in the Stars” by Gainesville playwright Stefanie Anarumo is the story of two people who are brought together by the manipulation of fate. Integrating American Sign Language into the story, this original piece explores the true meaning of communication, love, and understanding.

The doors open at 7pm,  the show starts at 8pm. Tickets are available now at www.thekeywesttheater.com or by calling (305) 985-0433.
